No justice, no peace
Read this article about the appointing of new Justices when Obama gets on board. The main FEAR is that the Justices he’ll appoint will be too liberal and will use empathy rather than the law when passing decisions. Soon the little man will go against big corporations and win lawsuits. Terrible right? Corporations will now be held accountable for their (greed motivated) actions. Damn those liberal courts for forcing tobacco companies to remove cartoons from their advertisements. Damn those liberal courts for forcing Enron to pay back their shareholders after that fiasco a couple years ago. I don’t care if the courts empathize with the little man, because it makes businesses more accountable for the way they are ran. I was going to counter my last statement by sayin, I don’t respect stupid lawsuits like when the lady sued McDonalds for burning herself with the hot coffee. That’s like duh bitch, it’s coffee, it’s supposed to be hot. But then I read about the case. A) She didn’t even wanna take it to court. She asked McDs to cover her medical bills. That I still didn’t agree with. The coffee is hot, duh, don’t put it in your lap. B) Then I read that McDonalds has been getting numerous complaints about people getting third degree burns due to the coffee being too hot. Ok. There are dumb people in this world and while it’s not my job to really look after (or out) for them, if I decided to run a business, it would become part of my ethical responsibility to make sure they didn’t hurt themselves because of me or my product (kinda like makin sure the people in your party don’t start believing the person you’re runnin against is an Arab or terrorist). McDonalds had numerous opportunities to step back and say “hey, this coffee is too hot, let’s turn it down a bit. And if the people say the coffee is too cold, we’ll bring it back up. But let’s stop sendin people to the hospital.” Responsibility. The corporations have some and it’s not (or shouldn’t be) just about makin the green. But I’m not the Devil’s Advocate either. I don’t want the Justices to be wishy washy with the Constitution or the law, but I don’t want people to be exploited by it either.
